Our clients had specific goals in mind for different areas of their backyard, but they had not pulled their goals into a plan. Specifically, they were challenged by creating a beautiful, cohesive space that met all of their goals and optimized the use of their space. Their plans included giving their kids a dedicated play area that accommodated a large jungle gym as well as a grassy area for the trampoline and free play. They also wanted to create a zone for their custom fireplace that was secluded from the rest of the yard. The clients are avid gardeners, so they needed to have the largest fruit and vegetable garden that the space allowed.
To accommodate all of their goals while also creating a gorgeous, aesthetically pleasing space, we met with the clients several times to deliver a yard design that they now love. The final design included a large, central area in the yard for the kids’ play space. Around the jungle gym and open play area, kiyuku turf was installed. We knew that it would be challenging to keep grass growing underneath a trampoline, so we addressed that situation by installing synthetic turf directly below the trampoline. A buffer space between the real grass and synthetic turf was created with a sandpit strip. We also added jumping log seats for the kids to use when they need a break from playing.
Behind the trampoline, the garden area was installed. We chose this location so that the garden could be expanded when the kids no longer needed a large play area. In the back corner, we created a secluded area with a custom steel backdrop for the clients’ fireball fireplace. Rustic seating customized for the space was installed near the fireplace. Because of the seats’ placement, the clients can now enjoy a lovely view of their in-ground pool and other spaces while relaxing by the fire.
